Yesterday, I had the privilege of being part of a Sri Lankan wedding at St Dominic's in Camberwell.
Inside the beautiful blue stone church on Riversdale Road, guests gathered for Sheneli and Indumith's Christian wedding. The morning light filtered gently through the stained glass windows warming the pews. As the wedding singer, my role was simple but important --to help tell Sheneli and Indumith's love story through music and usher their guests in worship and celebration. I opened with ''Amazing Grace," accompanied by a fellow Filipino musician/pianist Raul Policarpio. It was followed by ''One Bread, One Body" during offertory. As the gifts were brought forward, guests voices quietly joined in too not just in singing but in spirit. Later during the signing of the register, the couple chose "How great Thou Art"-- a prayerful song marking Sheneli and Indumith's wedding not just legally but spiritually. What made this day meaningful was how familiar every song felt for me. I have been singing some of these Christian songs in the church I grew up in. I loved that Sheneli and Indumith's guests didn't just listen-- they connected, as they smiled and some joined in the singing from the back rows.
